soldering iron cleaning

Hi,
How do you recommend cleaning and maintaining the tip of my soldering iron? Sorry, I don't have it with me or I'd tell you the brand, if that's important. Should I wipe it on a damp sponge while it's still hot? Brush it with flux? Gently use some fine grain steel wool?
