Hi Nancy,

Except for those upbeat magazine articles they've been writing for years, I think you are the first "regular glass person" I've spoken with who had a kind word for lead free solder!

Please share with us the brand of solder you are using, if they have more than one type, like pewter finish and bright finish, give us the particulars, and what type of flux you are using with it.

Thanks, Gary Dodge

: : I would like to make some night lights for children and think that instead of wrapping them with lead came that lead free solder would be much safer. However, I found an older post on this board that mentioned how difficult it is to work with. I am wondering if I should just forget about making night lights for a child's room or any child themed stained glass. Or is the lead that much of a worry when dealing with children? (I'm thinking back to my son, when he was a tot chewing on anything and everything he could get his hands on.)

: I guess everyone has their own experience, but my husband and I tried the lead-free solder, and we wouldn't go back for anything! We find it works more easily, looks just as good and we don't have to worry about endangering anyone wherever our pieces end up. A very slightly lower temperature when soldering is required for best results, but that's the only adjustment we've had to make. And incidentally, when lead use is finally banned in a couple of years, we'll be ready! Good luck with your night lights.
