Hi Susan,

Any loose cement should be removed before recementing. To do this many restorers soak the panels to soften the old cement. Some folks soak in thinners, others in soap solutions, others use caustics and some just use plain old water.

Whatever you choose to use, you can use a fine bristle brush or even dental instruments to pick out the remaining cement.

If what is in there is just that tough to get out, then it is probably also tough enough to leave in.

: Hi all,

: I've been asked to help restore some church windows, approximately 40 years old. They are basicaly in good condition considering their exposeure to the outside elements. Two questions - these are leaded glass windows and most of the cement holding the glass panes in place is old and crumbling away. What is the best method for removing this old cement and does it all have to be removed before re-cementing the window?
: Thanks - Susan
