There is probably nothing wrong with your soldering. the likely culprit is in your final clean-up of the completed piece.

You need to wash it thoroughly to remove every trace of the corrosive elements in the solder and / or patina that you are using.

The best way is to use the preparations that are made for the job like CJ's Flux and Patina Remover. Scrub the piece with the cleaner and a bristle brush at least twice, making sure to rinse thoroughly between and after the final wash.

Baking soda is another good way to neutralize these chemicals. First wash thoroughly with dish detergent, then scrub with a baking soda paste, then repeat.

This should help.

: I'm sure I can't be doing it right because after about a month or so of the piece hanging, a white film forms on the solder and seems to be corrosive.
