: : : I am restoring some lead came pieces and want to know the best way to clean it in order to apply patina. I was told that older pieces of lead came was covered with linseed oil. If that is true does anybody have advice on how to clean the came? I have been wire brushing it with a dremel tool but am a bit afraid of creating lead dust. Any suggestions?

: : Why are you cleaning the came? Patina contains acids and should not be used in restoration. The lead gets the oil as a by product of the putty process.

: Let me see if I understand. I should not patina the new lead came? Do I rub it with the putty to add the color or do I leave it in its natural state? This also makes me ask the following question. Should I never patina lead came?

The oil in the putty along with the brushing during cleaning will darken the lead. If you patina, then you need to nutralize the acid. This is work not needed.
