About the best thing I've tried is the fine steel wool.
Just be sure that you work with it WET. Otherwise you are risking exposure to the dust from the lead and lead oxides in the white corrosion. Wear rubber gloves too.

: I am a novice at stained glass and have only been working on projects for about 7-8 months. A friend has asked me to touch up a piece that she picked up at a garage sale. It is a couple of years old and has already turned a natural patina. The solder joints also have a white powery corrison on them. I think that is from improper cleaning and the flux was not neutralized. The piece is a mixture of lead came and copper foil. I want to clean it and appply a black patina after repairing a couple of solder seams. What is the best way to clean the solder? Is there a chemical strip or just a lot of sanding with steel wool?
