Putty?

Gary, this is my first time using lead H came in a (going to be installed) window. The dimensions are 60" X 15" it is very detailed but extreemly flexible. All the lead is soldered. I don't remember the steps in using the putty. Do I (black) patina first then rub in putty? Do I have to use whitening? What do I do after the flux is washed off? PS. Love your site!!
