If your iron truly feels like it's dragging I can only think of three possibilities: either you aren't using any flux, your iron tip is extremely dirty and needs to have a serious meeting with a sal-ammoniac block or you have a bur on the tip of your iron and need a new tip.
As for "plain old help", I suggest that you read many of the posts about soldering on this board, look in our help desk area and our glassworkers tips area too. there is quite a bit of information right here to be had. If you have any more specific questions I'm sure somebody will jump in to help.
