Years ago I bought a Paragraver and used adhesive mylar to not only put the type design onto the glass, but also to act as resist. This stuff could be run through a copier or laser printer. I'm sure a product must be available now for inkjet printers. You simply engrave right through the resist. When I engraved, I always hit the engraving with a blast of aluminum oxide to smooth the "carved look" of the engraver. I made some very intricate and beautiful etchings using this method.
