What size do the holes have to be and how deep?

There are diamond drill bits that fit into the chuck of a standard drill, but if they have to go all the way through a 5" sphere there is a problem because the shaft of the bits is only about 1.5".

There are also carbide spear point bits that are longer, but I doubt if the carbide tips are up to the task you require.

: i have a science fair project to complete, that requires me to drill a hole in a glass sphere (about 5in diameter). do you have any easy suggestions on how to accomplish this?
