Hi Sandy,

Yes, there are major differences between brands of solder. First off you need to be sure your brand uses all virgin metals. I like to recycle as much as the next guy, but gov't standards allow impurities in the reclaimed metal that just don't help your work. Dull patches in the solder job and lots of junk building up on your iron tip is the result. I use Canfield, it costs more but is worth the difference.

As for the discoloration you talk about, how long does it take? Any solder will oxidize and get dull looking, sitting on a shelf. Most metals with gold being the obvious exception will tarnish if left exposed to the atmosphere. Add an occasional flux fume wafting by and it will take it's toll.

Hi Gary, Are there any differences in the brands of solder? Are some better than others? I know the one I use discolors after being on the shelf for a while. It is not because of flux getting on it either.
