As Lorelei said there is no danger from lead "fumes" but you should keep from eating, drinking or smoking while you are working with lead. Wearing gloves to cover any small cuts on your skin is a good idea. Always wash your hand afterwards and for goodness sacks keep your hands away from your mouth and face. (Which your mother probably told you to do growing up anyway) It is true that the danger of lead poisoning is very small for the average hobbyist but taking a few simple precautions isn't a waste of time no matter what anyone says.

Now flux fumes....those are the real dangerous buggers! Ventilation....Ventilation....Ventilation. You just can't have enough. If you find you are starting to have sinus trouble you need to back off from those flux fumes.
