While I admire your initiative, I would strongly recommend you try to find somewhere close enough to you to take a few classes. Nothing can replace good hands-on instruction.
Having said that, a good book with begginner instructions is Stained Glass Basics: Techniques, Tools, Projects -- by Chris Rich
