: : I have a large leaded glass door with a horizonal rebar soldered to the jonts. The rebar solder joint broke and I attempted to resolder it with my 100/140 watt soldering gun without success. My questions are:

: : What wattage soldering gun/iron is appropriate for this application?

: : What solder should I be using (50/50 or 60/40)?

: : Is one flux better than another for this application?

: : Can you give me an overview of the soldering process to use?

: : Thanks in advance for any responses. My soldering experience is limited to electronics and this soldering application is out of my comfort zone. I have read what I could find on the internet, including a few links obtained from your BB. However, I could not find anything specifically dealing with soldering large rebar (1/8" x 1/2").

: : Thanks again,

: First, if the bar broke away from the window then there is probibly NO lead left to resolder it too.
: If I am wrong and there is lead, you need about 125-175 watt soldering iron (not a gun), 60/40 solder and a good zinc cloride flux. Next you need to clean the bar and the lead so they are bright and shinny. Flux the bar and lead and hold the soldering iron on the bar till it gets hot and put solder to the bar and let it flow onto the lead and quickly touch the solder/lead with the iron. This is best done with the window on a bench, not in place.

Vic,

Thanks for the reply and the advice. I will obtain the supplies you specified and use your instructions. Could I bother you with two additional questions?

1. The best place to order solder and flux? Internet purchase is fine with me.

2. Can I take the door down, lay it on padded saw horses, and perform the fix without removing the large glass panel from the wooden door?

Thanks for all of your help. I do appreciate it.

Keith
