First question is just how large are the chips. Most grinders will make tiny chips along the edge that foil easily covers. This should be considered normal.

If you are doing mosaics these tiny chips may still be undesireable. If that's the case and you have a Glastar or Inland grinder you can fit a Glastar Fine Head on it that will reduce the chipping.

If the chips are rather large and would stick out beyond foil this is for the most part an abnormal condition, especially if the same thing happens with all different types of glass. If you have only tried one type of glass with it, it could be the glass.

One thing that can reduce chipping is adding a grinder coolant to the water.
Another thing that influences chipping is the direction that you feed your glass across the head. For some reason I have found that there is less chipping when I feed the glass across the head in a direction opposite the head rotation.
The last factor that I have seen cause chipping is not feeding the glass firmly enough into the head. If you are just tickling the bit with the glass this can cause chips.
If none of these things seem to help you've probably got a bad head.

: What brand of Grinder and what brand grinding head are you using? Sounds like you have a defective grinder bit. Inland is fairly well known for that, but it's a possibility with some others as well. There's not much you can do while grinding to produce a chipped edge on your own....it's not technique related....it's equipment. Some people report chipping with new Grinder heads but I use Glastar and have never had that problem.

: : I need to know what I am doing wrong when I grind my glass pieces. The immediate top and bottom of the glass next to the edge are not smooth. It almost looks like the grinder is not sharp enough and takes tiny little bites out of the glass. I bought my grinder new and it has always done this. Any thoughts?
