Patina/Finishing Compound

Help! I have just used the Kem-O-Pro finishing compound on my lead project and discovered that I must have rubbed too hard in some areas as the patina is much lighter in those places. Can I just use steel wool to remove the finishing compound and re-patina those areas? Any advice is appreciated!
