Rob,

Angel is right about the bit being bad. Nothing you can do to a bit should cause that to happen. Even grinding a bit dead dry, which will certainly ruin it, should not ruin it in that way.

As far as complaining long and loud, you should not have to do that. If it comes to that sort of thing I'd find a new place to shop pronto.

I know that Gryphon will readily replace the bit and your retailer should be happy to call them for you and arrange for the replacement.

: Yes, Rob, you have a defective bit. I would contact both the place you bought it AND the company who made it and complain LOUDLY and LONG until they replace it. If you keep having this trouble, you might look into using a bit made by another manufacturer. If you can use Gastar grinder heads on your Gryphon, get those. They cost more but last the longest and are of the best quality.

: There used to be this same problem with Inland heads...I don't know if they fixed it. Their heads sometimes ARRIVED with bald spots. They cost 1/2 as much as Glastar, but last 1/4 as long....if you're lucky. Don't put up with anything substandard...get PUSHY and LOUD if necessary. With some companies, it's not necessary. I don't know about Gryphon. I only have their came saw which is really a great tool.

: : I recently bought a Gryphon studio grinder, and am very happy with it. The 1/5-horsepower motor really delivers the goods, and it runs smoothly and quietly.
: : However, tonight, after just a small amount of grinding, my bit got stripped (a whole swath of the diamond coating came right off.) I adjusted the bit--moved it down a little--to get contact with a fresh band of grinding surface, but the same problem happened after grinding just a few pieces. Initially, my bit might not have been wet enough. However, even with the "cooling tower" totally full of water and water all over the place, I still stripped the bit again. Any idea what's going wrong? Could I just have a defective bit? I'm not pressing too hard and, as I said, am using plenty of water (though no bit lube)... ideas, anyone? Thanks!
