Hi,
You both seem quite perfectly correct--to my relief. I called Gryphon and they're sending a new bit, no questions asked. They said it certainly was defective. So let's hope that's the last of this problem. It brings two others questions to mind: I simply keep the "cooling tower" (which feeds water to the sponge that hugs the bit) full of water. Should I be using any sort of lubricant instead? Also, seeing as my shaft spun with that damaged bit for a while, is it likely my whole machine is damaged, too? It seems to be fine--runs and sounds the same. But one wonders...
