For what it's worth Debbie, I never had a problem with my Weller tip until I used a sponge I bought from the grocery store as a cleaning spot during soldering. It completely ruined the tip in a matter of a few hours. As I now understand, most sponges have some sort of chemical on them.
I ordered a new tip and went back to my old way of dampening a few shop towels ( Home Depot) and swiping the tip off on them between solder runs. It works fine, and the tips are in great condition again.
Best of luck.
