Just a couple of quick additonal comments.

1) If you are working with very skinny cames, usually called hobby cames, it is easy to overstretch them as they do not give as obvious resistance when they are done.

If you came gets visibly smaller, shows stretch marks on the metal surface or the heart gets so short that you can't fit glass between the leaves, you have over stretched.

2) There is some chance that you will get a galvanic reaction when mixing lead and zinc came to be used in a damp location. This can cause premature failure of the solder joints that join the two different metals.

: : 1) I understand that the measurements on came refer to the outer "face". Is 1/4" the standard? 3/8 seems a little wide??

:
: Came is shapped like the letter H. The outside parts are called leaves or flange, the inside is the heart.
: The sizes given in catalongs refer to the width of the flange. So 1/4" came means that the total width is 1/4" The heart is + - 1/16" so the glass gets covered by 3/32". There is NO standard size came. CAme comes 3/32" to 1 1/2" wide.

: : 2) When you stretch Lead came...how far do you stretch it? Is it evident once you put it in the lead vise and begin pulling?

:
: Stand with your legs apart, one in front of the other, and pull with your arms. Pull slowly and you will feel the lead stop stretching, so YOU stop. Thin lead stretchs more then wide lead (usually).

: : 3) I was going to use lead came for the interior pieces and zinc for the outer edges. I can't find any reason why this is unacceptable.

:
: You can do this if you want. Unless the zinc is to serve as the finished frame, there is NO reason to use it over lead.

: : 4) Do you literally shape the came by bending it around your cut piece of glass, or do you put it on your “pattern” and shape it that way?

: Shape it around the glass.
