grinding glass

I need to know what I am doing wrong when I grind my glass pieces. The immediate top and bottom of the glass next to the edge are not smooth. It almost looks like the grinder is not sharp enough and takes tiny little bites out of the glass. I bought my grinder new and it has always done this. Any thoughts?
