Protection???

I am a novice at stained glass and have a question about a project I am about to undertake. The panel I will be doing is 18" X 25" (for me a big project). The panel is going to be set into a wall as a window. I have someone to put it in the window and frame for me so that is no problem but is there something special that I need to do to the window itself to protect it from the elements? With something this size do I need to worry about support of any kind running through the panel? If I don't so something correctly since I am not a pro by any means, am I going to have a sagging/leaking window in a few years?
