: : : : : : Ok Gary, please help me here...I have cut out a picture from the tropical teasers book (page 19 the "cool flamingo", I would like this to be an 18 x 24..when completed. It will be done in lead came. Tell me where I go wrong, I can't seem to get started...

: : : : : : I'm going to use a pencil and trace the pattern and then take that to a photo place to enlarge it to 18 x 24..I will then trace it again on a hard stock type of pattern paper, I will cut the pieces from the hard stock paper to use to trace onto my glass before cutting. I will lay the original down on my work board, and trim any excess paper away from the left edge up to the border line which I will use to place my first piece of lead came. I will do the same for the bottom border line. I will cut my glass pieces, and when I cut my glass, I cut a bit inside the pattern line and then place the pattern piece on that to see how much I need to grind. I then take that piece of glass and lay it in the lead came channel either on the bottom corner or on the left side. I continue this way until I have the entire pattern covered with my glass pieces in order to see if I need to grind any further. I then start puting my lead came around the pieces and build out. Once that is done I go back and start to solder the joints. When I'm to the point of completion, I put the top piece of lead came on and then the right side of came to finish. I'll then turn it over and solder the back side. I'll wash it real good to remove the flux and dry it and then prepare to do the putty process.

: : : : : : Now, Gary, where did I screw up???? Did I forget to measure anything before I started?? I'm so very confused, I've heard that before I start putting my first piece of lead came down on the left hand side, that I have to measure 1/8" for the glass on the pattern before I even start cutting...help, help, help, where am I going wrong??? There's so many windows I would love to do, but I'm being told so many different things!!!!

: : : : : : Thanks Gary

: : : : : You NEED to cut the pattern with lead shears. Better explain the !/8" thing more clearly, sounds wrong.

: : : :
: : : : I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I do use the lead shears when cutting out my pattern pieces. Would this be what others are referring to when they mentin that 1/8" measure? that when cutting with the lead shears that this gives that 1/8" measure?

: : : Don't know. The heart of most came is around 1/16", so that's what the shears remove.

so then what I explained so far has been correct? am I doing things right? I have the lead shears, I tend to use a marker to outline my pattern onto the glass then cut the glass. I've tried the other method of using a glue stick but never have any luck with the pattern staying on the glass while grinding.
